The Almighty Symptom

...our most powerful ally, but looked upon as our worst enemy.

As BJ Palmer (developer of chiropractic) expounded in his book Palmer's Law of Life, "we are aware of our hunger only when we are hungry; of thirst when thirsty.. we are conscious of our heart only when it beats irregularly, too fast or too slow.  We give our stomach a second thot when we have cramps and become aware of our lungs when breathing becomes spasmodic or asthmatic."  Symptoms awaken us from our "unawareness" stupor.  They remind us that we are vulnerable.  The human body is an ingenious creation - it allows us freedom from all the details of cellular function, but even more outstanding is that it knows when to make us pay attention.

Truth be known, symptoms are one of our most precious gifts.  They are our body's messengers, an intelligent adaptation to the various stresses in our lives (i.e. overwhelmed, overworked, mismanaged, or misused.).  A symptom indicates that we are reaching our outer limits of adaptability; our signal that somewhere we are out of balance, either physically, spiritually, or emotionally/mentally.  Symptoms are also the body's attempt to maintain health and wellness.  Fever, vomiting, diarrhea... although they are very uncomfortable, they are vital to our well being.

Chiropractic recognizes that symptoms are a natural part of the healing process.  Rather than judge them as good or bad, the more appropriate path is to continue to free the nerve system from any interference, allowing the body to function at its best.

In the end, its not about the "ache, pain, runny nose, sniffling, sneezing, cough, or fever" that can bring you to your knees.  It's about your life.  Invariably, the sum total of your life will far outweigh the many symptoms you will experience in your lifetime.

The Almighty Symptom... One of our most precious gifts
